Brutus is well-liked not just by the populace of Rome, but also by the senators. Brutus' love of the Roman Republic was more important to him than being Caesar's devoted friend. Later, when asked if he is willing to go to death for his friend, Brutus says yes, adding that nothing could keep them apart now that they love each other so much.īrutus was recognized for his honesty and morals, and he treasured his friendships. Overcome with emotion, Brutus replies that he also loves Cassius and they embrace each other warmly. As soon as the court adjourns, Cassius throws himself at Brutus's feet and tells him that he loves him. Then, after hearing what crimes they were accused of committing, they both declare that they would sacrifice their lives for one another. At their trial, Brutus and Cassius give their opinions of each other's character. But before he can do so, both men are arrested by the authorities on charges of treason. This changes one day when Brutus sees Lucius lovingly caressing his wife Portia's portrait. If anything, their relationships are too serious.īrutus has always loved Cassius but kept his feelings hidden for fear of being rejected. They know this about themselves and so they never play around when it comes to making commitments. When it comes to the matter of love, however, there is no middle ground. Their most heated debates are quickly settled. It is precisely because they adore one other that they are able to communicate openly with one another, even when they disagree. Perhaps that is why some historians believe they might have been lovers too.īrutus and Cassius are old friends who have known each other for a long time. They came from similar backgrounds and had much in common. So, in essence, they were brothers who happened to be alive at the same time and in the same country. This is why Caesar could call Brutus his friend - they were intimate friends who did everything together and shared every aspect of their lives. But in ancient Rome, the word "friend" meant something more specific - someone who was very close to you emotionally and personally. Nowadays, we use the word "friend" to describe someone who makes you feel good about yourself and wants what's best for you. Some say it was because Brutus loved Caesar and wanted to save his life while others say it was because Brutus was angry at Caesar for killing his father. Also, according to some historians, they may have been lovers.Ĭaesar and Brutus had different reasons to kill Caesar. In Roman times, the only way to be close to a person of great status was to be near to him/her. Marcus Brutus, Caesar's servant and close friend, had a tight relationship with Caesar but a closer bond with Rome and its people.
